Gynecological and Reproductive Health

Although Melissa doesn’t limit her practice to one specialty, she has worked extensively in the field of gynecological health - helping people with menstrual issues, fertility challenges, pregnancy and post partum support, peri-menopause and menopause.

Menstrual issues

The healing systems of Chinese Medicine (acupuncture and medicinal herbs) have provided gynecological and fertility support for thousands of years. Reproductive physiology is complicated and often can be disrupted by stress or other life circumstances. Chinese Medicine offers treatment options beyond "going on the pill" (the pill is excellent contraception but doesn't correct the hormonal disharmonies at the root of many menstrual cycle issues). In addition to strengthening the body's constitution, Chinese Medicine nourishes and regulates the endocrine and reproductive systems, in order to establish a healthy menstrual cycle and optimize fertility. It can treat painful periods, pms, pmdd, irregular periods, amennorrhea and many other related symptoms.

Fertility

Sometimes it turns out that getting pregnant is more challenging than expected. The window for conception is limited and there are many factors that contribute to conceiving and carrying a pregnancy to term. Chinese Medicine can identify and treat the subtle imbalances that can be at the root of many fertility issues. For example, acupuncture can treat ovulation irregularities, strengthen the follicular and luteal phases and increase circulation to the reproductive organs. Acupuncture works an excellent complement to IVF or IUI as it reduces stress, supports the stimulation of follicles, thickens the endometrial lining and decreases any side effects of the medications.

Pregnancy + Postpartum

Building a baby with your body is complex and remarkable process. Each pregnancy is different and comes with it's own particular symptoms and discomforts. Acupuncture can safely address the specific issues often associated with pregnancy (ex. nausea, heartburn, swelling, sinus issues, back pain) while also supporting the stability of the pregnancy and the energy of the woman. After giving birth, acupuncture helps women regain their strength as well as provides assistance with any issues that may arise during the post partum time, including issues with lactation.

PEri menopause + menopause

This is a significant time of transition and one that often comes with lots of symptoms, and not a lot of support. As the reproductive energies shift, it is felt deeply in the body and often on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels. Acupuncture and herbal formulas can offer a lot of support during this time. By regulating the meridian system and addressing the balance of yin/yang in the body, acupuncture and herbs can specifically address each woman’s particular constellation of symptoms. Commonly addressed symptoms include, but are not limited to: mood disturbances, hot flashes, dryness, insomnia and night sweats.
